Gluten free oatflakes
Nutritional information / 100g:
Ingredients: oatflakes
Oats are a highly valuable grain, rich in protein and fiber. They retain their nutritional value even after being processed into flakes. Easy to prepare and versatile in use, it is no wonder they have become—and remain—a favorite breakfast dish in English-speaking countries; likewise, it is unsurprising that they have gained increasing popularity in Hungary in recent years. You simply never get tired of them!
Rolled oats are produced from carefully selected whole oat grains. Contrary to what the name might suggest, they are not merely flaked; instead, they are produced through steaming and flattening. This process ensures that all valuable nutrients remain intact, and—unlike other cereal flakes—they do not cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels.
Fun fact: In the United States, October 29th has been designated National Oatmeal Day to raise awareness about the health benefits of this favorite breakfast food.
Significance and effects:
Oats consist primarily of complex carbohydrates, which are absorbed slowly and do not cause sudden spikes in blood sugar. Protein and fiber content further contribute to this effect, making oats a suitable choice even for those managing blood sugar issues. Thanks to its high fiber content, rolled oats help prevent constipation and reduce the risk of developing colon cancer; furthermore, the water-soluble fiber known as beta-glucan plays a key role in lowering blood cholesterol levels. Another benefit is that fiber increases the feeling of fullness, thereby delaying the next meal and reducing portion sizes—a particularly useful trait when trying to lose weight.
Oats contain active compounds that help lower blood pressure, making them a beneficial addition to the diet for those with hypertension, especially if weight loss is also a goal. The antioxidants in oats help relieve itching and reduce inflammation, while also contributing to healthy, beautiful skin.
Consumption is not recommended for those with gluten sensitivity. Although oats and oat products do not naturally contain gluten, they are often grown and processed alongside wheat, rye, and barley, making cross-contamination with gluten likely. If you have a gluten sensitivity, it is advisable to purchase rolled oats specifically labeled as gluten-free.
Usage:
They are most commonly consumed as porridge, and almost everyone has their own preferred method and flavor combination—one that is quick, simple, and minimizes the amount of washing up required. A single serving is approximately... This amount corresponds to 25–30g of rolled oats, which should be cooked in 1.5 to 2 times the volume of water or plant-based milk for 5–10 minutes, stirring constantly. Another simple method is to soak the oats overnight in the same amount of liquid and warm them up in the morning. There is no limit to how you can flavor them; they can be prepared sweet or savory—with dried or fresh fruit, coconut chips, or carob powder—or simply enjoyed plain.
Rolled oats are also frequently used in cakes and cookies; when soaked, they can be mixed into meat patties or fillings and are even suitable for use as a breading.
