Spirulina is a microscopic bacteria. Coiled up in spiral shapes, the algae form a large, coherent mass on the surface of the water. In its natural form, the algae is only found in high pH value, pure standing water in tropical and subtropical climates throughout Central Africa, Asia and America. Unfortunately, there are few such natural waters left, therefore spirulina is grown artificially, in pools of water found in controlled environments.
For a long time, the algae were classified as a plant due to its green color and photosynthesis activity, meaning that it harnesses the power of the Sun for energy. It was subsequently established as a bacteria, however, this didn’t detract from the value of spirulina at all as it also transpired that cell membrane housing vital nutrients is “soft” and isn’t encased in the cell walls typical of plants. This makes it more easily digestible, allowing us to access the precious substances more effectively.
Spirulina has long been used for dietary purposes, yet has also been available as a dietary supplement in recent decades. In Asia it is mainly used to treat malnutrition, whilst NASA astronauts use it to boost their immune systems. Many studies have been conducted to examine the possible role of spirulina in treating various diseases and conditions.
Significance, effects:
Spirulina is a superfood, which means it is rich in nutrients and minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and biologically active substances. As a dietary supplement, it is more often used for its high antioxidant content rather than its favorable protein or fat composition (as our body requires far more of these substances than can be provided by powders or tablets). These substances help the body cope with stress and harmful effects, supporting the immune system and inhibiting the release of histamine, which is advantageous in the case of allergies and catarrhal diseases.
Spirulina is particularly recommended for those carrying out strenuous mental or physical labor as well as for athletes. Its use is safe and has no side effects.
