Carob powder is produced from the fruit of the carob tree, by drying and grounding the fruit. It has a color and texture similar to cocoa, which is why it’s mainly used as a cocoa replacement. However, as opposed to cocoa, carob causes no harm to pets, which is why it’s often used to make pet treats.
Ingredients: carob
Significance, effects: As opposed to cocoa, carob contains no caffeine and theobromine, which can have an unpleasant effect on those sensitive to it. Carob soothes instead of exciting the digestive system, which is why it can be used to mitigate the symptoms of diarrhea. Carob powder tastes sweeter than cocoa. Carob has higher fiber content and its fat content is much lower than cocoa, which is why it’s recommended for those looking for a light dessert while dieting. Carob powder also contains antioxidants and important minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc. Carob powder is naturally glutenfree.
Use: Carob powder can be used in a 1:1 ratio to replace cocoa in practically all recipes, in both raw or cooked form.
